climate emergency protest, Sydney - please spread the word - *Climate **emergency - **renewables **now**!*

*Protest outside offices of Xstrata coal!*
*1 Macquarie Place** Sydney** CBD (off Loftus St, near Circular Quay) , **
5pm Thursday October 2nd*
***It's a climate emergency!** **Melting of the Arctic sea ice may be
complete by the northern summer of 2010. We must urgently decarbonise our economy to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and existing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Xtrata, NSW's biggest coal exporter, is about to start work on the Mangoola mine in the Hunter Valley. The call for renewables is more urgent than ever!*

The protest is organised by People for a Safe Climate (PSC), which brings together people from climate action groups and other environmental, peace, social justice and political organisations. We meet Thursdays, 6pm in the UTS Students Association back room, level 3, UTS Broadway. All welcome. For further info, contact Kamala, 0417 319662; Holly 0417 682 541; Alison 9818 6718

*The rally is calling for:

· *100% electricity from renewables within 10 years*
Former US vice-president Al Gore has called for US power generation to be 100% carbon-free within 10 years. With abundant solar, wind and geothermal resources, there's no reason why Australia couldn't be powered entirely by renewables. We must go beyond the government's inadequate targets.

· *Keeping power in public hands*
We need maximum public accountability for the power industry. Full
electricity privatisation has been knocked on the head, but there is still a danger that our new Premier will sell-off the electricity retailers, move that would continue to sacrifice our environmental needs.

· *The phasing out of coal*
Burning coal for electricity accounts for over a third of Australia's
greenhouse gas emissions each year. In addition, when Australia's coal exports are burnt, it causes more pollution than the total of Australia's domestic economy.

· *The expansion of public transport
*Transport is responsible for 14% of Australia's carbon emissions, with the largest contribution coming from passenger cars. We need to reverse the priorities of Governments which fund for freeways while starving public transport systems.

· *No carbon trading loopholes!*
The government is taking a business-as-usual approach to the climate emergency. Carbon trading alone will be too slow; with free permits for the big polluters it won't work at all. It must not be linked to international "carbon offset" schemes; these do nothing to reduce domestic emissions and often support environmentally damaging projects. Under its plan, the government admits, emissions will rise for some years to come.

*We need urgent action on climate change!*
A call for a national week of protest action beginning September 21
Climate change is already occurring, much faster than the world's
scientists have predicted. Recent data including the very real possibility of the arctic sea-ice melting by September this year demonstrate that this is a climate emergency.

We are concerned that the Australian government's proposed Emissions Trading Scheme will be full of loopholes and by the government's own admission will allow emissions to continue rising for some years. We believe such incremental measures are unacceptable: We need greenhouse emissions to start to fall immediately and sharply.

To begin to solve the problem we need action on many fronts including:

* No new coal;
* Massive public spending on renewable energy;
* More public transport not new freeways;
* End logging of old growth forests.

We call for a national week of protests across Australia at the Spring Equinox, in the week beginning September 21. This week of action can highlight the summer melt of the Arctic ice and other worrying signs that demand urgent measures to de-carbonise the economy from state and Federal governments.

We ask climate change campaign groups and networks and all environmentally concerned organisations across Australia to work together for a co-ordinated and effective week of public protest around these themes.

You are invited to the *Climate change | Social change conference*,

*Climate change | Social change conference*, -
April 11-13, 2008 Sydney

The world is teetering on the brink of unstoppable climate change. Many
now recognise the need for serious change in the way we produce and use
energy, our transport systems, food production, urban design and
forestry practices. Yet politicians are still mouthing platitudes while
allowing corporations to continue to profit from polluting our
atmosphere and destroying our ecosystem.

The need for social change has become an urgent part of preventing
catastrophic climate change. Can the market fix the problem? What is
the real record of carbon trading? How can we build a social movement
capable of averting this disaster? What models and experiences can offer
real solutions?

Cycle for clean energy or Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle (CANC)

Cycle for clean energy or Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle (CANC) - Anne Goddard added an entry about Stop the nuclear industry:

Today we (Nat and I) asked our boss if we could take some time off work to join the peace convergence 22, 23, 24th June, Qld, Australia
http://peaceconvergence.com

We had committed to going before getting the jobs.
Further, I asked if I could take extra time off to do the Rockhampton to Bundaberg leg of the CANC ride (some further 2 weeks).
http://canc.org.au !>/image

Unfortunately, I cannot go all the way to Canberra again, as i am casual, no work, no pay. I am eager to return to the job as I like it and all of the team in the packing shed are wonderful people.
On the other hand, we do not want to lose our jobs … and as the recent rains have really slowed the season, i hope they will give us a favourable decision on Wednesday, when we return to work.

My family, friends, neighbours and I are attending the peace convergence to draw attention to the facts that;
1. we need safe sustainable, renewable and reliable energy supplies … with the aim of “benign” output.
2. we do not need nuclear ships in our harbours.
3. we must not allow our troops to be exposed and unmonitored in the vicinty of Depleted Uranium weapons either on the battle field, or anywhere else.
4. we do not need nuclear energy
5. we do not need nuclear waste.[Stop the nuclear industry]

I hope you will consider joining us.

Warm regards
Anne

(Poster attached)

Despite giving an "absolute categorical assurance" prior to the last election that the NT would not be targeted for a Federal radioactive waste dump, in June 2005 the Federal Government announced that three Department of Defence sites in the NT would be assessed for suitability.

Brendan Nelson, as Federal Science Minister, queried "why on earth can't people in the middle of nowhere have [radioactive] waste?" ; Current Science Minister Julie Bishop remarked "all the sites in the NT are well away from houses... some distance from any form of civilisation."

Protecting Community, Country and Culture

Remote areas are not uninhabited and lifeless places. Traditional Owners and community members from the proposed dump sites are travelling across the country to express their concerns of how a radioactive dump would irreversibly damage country and culture.

Tent Embassy "report"

http://www.aboriginaltentembassy.net

Dear friends :-)

... back in Bundy, safe and sound.

Considering we left on a wing and a prayer (with NO funds), we feel a great sense of accomplishment.

My kids (Scott 13, and Natalie, 18) had a wonderful time.

As did our dogs - Lady (a highly active and skittish female six month old rottie/border collie cross) and Chief (a 2 year old blue/border collie cross).
It was very "comfy" in Natalie's little 20 year old toyota hatchback.
