remember "the Greenhouse Mafia"?

Article (1) 4 Corners - ABC

"Having found out what I’ve found out, I find it impossible to continue with a clear conscience without speaking out" - whistleblower interviewed by Four Corners.

Are Australians getting the whole truth on global warming?

Not according to evidence given to Four Corners, which returns with disturbing allegations about the power wielded by industry lobbyists, the self-proclaimed greenhouse "mafia".

Exposing the 'greenhouse mafia'

Zane Alcorn, Melbourne
26 October 2007

Guy Pearse — the speechwriter for the federal Coalition environment minister from 1997 to 2000 who blew the whistle last year on the Howard government’s use of Australia’s biggest polluters to write its greenhouse gas emissions policy — visited Melbourne on October 24 as part of an east-coast speaking tour.

Pearse introduced himself by saying that he was still a member of the Liberal Party. He said that from around 1990 until John Hewson’s failed “Fightback” election campaign in 1993, official Liberal policy was for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2000.

He recalled how, while working for the Liberal Party, he “ignored pennies dropping” as he became aware of the systematic deception of the public on climate change by the Howard government’s public relations machine. This was when he decided to blow the whistle.

Pearse was interviewed by the ABC TV’s Four Corners program on “The Greenhouse Mafia”, aired in February 2006. After this, he said that the Liberals quietly turned their back on him.

Much discussion about the worm....

WHY NO GREENS???

Such an obvious question, yet why no answers!

I would love to see Bob Brown take them both on, and wipe the floor clean of them both with his Party's honesty and integrity.

He has the RIGHT answers because the Greens Party have the BEST policy solutions.

The Greens time has come! If only mainsteam media would give them a chance to show the public.

"I would love to see Bob Brown take them both on"
you could hardly say that bob baby has a way with words now could you ... he is one reason why the green vote is so dismal ... as an orator he needs a total rebuild if that is possible. (or another speech writer ... can't remember if he writes his own or not)
BTW we did touch base on oxford st many years ago and even then, in this no pressure surrounding (and no, it wasn't the barrack, male preferred space nightclub or stonewall) he was .... "timid" for want of a better word.

MY REPLY:

Are we talking about the same bob?

Virtual, we obviously have met different men. The Bob Brown I met is inspirational and brought me to tears with his words. Strong, tall, charismatic and confident. As far as I am aware, this is the first election where he has come out and said that he is the "leader" of the Greens. Something that needed to be done, to compete (on equal grounds) with our other "Leaders".

He speaks about the FACTS clearly and "neatly"; without supurfluous generalisations and without the feel good "fluff" and babble of the other two leaders. He speaks like this because he DOESN'T have an unlimited media budget, he understands that EVERY word counts. He gets 3-5 second "news sound bites" because the media are obliged (by law) to give "equal" (unpaid for) time. How many ad's for the Greens have you seen/heard on mainstream media?

When he came to Bundaberg in the last Federal election he spent a good 10 minutes with my family and I, chatting in the heat of my tiny car. I felt very honoured, there were many people eagerly awaiting him. He wrote a full page message to my daughter in a book she still treasures. He also gave me an autographed copy of his book, "Memo for a saner world". Fascinating read, by the way. I recommend it if you want to really know how he ticks.

He is a true gentleman.
Perhaps he came across to you as "timid", because he did not want to offend you (or your opinions).
;-)

Is Howard being fair dinkum????

Everything you need to know about the corruption of climate change policy in Australia:

Is Howard being fair dinkum?
Jill Singer
June 04, 2007

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,21841497-5000117,00.html

JILL Singer writes: How seriously does John Howard take climate change? Consider who he chooses to listen to on this issue so vital to our future.
Until last year, the man John Howard appointed to advise him on science policy was Dr Robert Batterham.
How confident can Australians be that he provided independent advice?

At the same time that Dr Batterham was working as the PM's chief scientist, he was earning an estimated $700,000 a year as a director of Rio Tinto, a company with a huge vested interest in Australia's carbon policy.

Taxpayers also fund the Commonwealth Government's Australian Greenhouse Office.
Gwen Andrews was its chief executive for four years, including the period John Howard was meant to be deliberating whether to ratify Kyoto. According to Andrews, he did not ask her for a single briefing.

Dr Graeme Pearman was for many years the head of the CSIRO's Division of Atmospheric Research and reveals that CSIRO scientists were gagged under pressure from the Government.
They were not allowed to talk about the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Women's and Men's Legislatures

PM's policy punishes women

While women in the Australian Parliament consolidate cross-party legislative powers, the policies of misogynist Prime Minister John Howard continue to marginalise and punish half the nation's citizens.

"The gender pay gap in the private-sector full-time labour market is widening, as is the gap between those on awards and those in the bargaining stream", according to a report by the Women in Social and Economic Research group at Curtin Business School.

Moreover, "The potential exists for gender inequities to grow."

ALP and nuclear

From Benny Zable:

Anne
I just come back from the ALP national conference at which a decision was past to expand on uranium mining.
It is tragic in so many ways. It just legits John Howard push for Nuclear Power stations adds more nuclear fuel to Nuclear weapons industries and of cause we increase the piles uf deadly radioactive waste which gives the green light for Nuclear Dumps in the NT.

Christine Mills spoke at a rally outside the ALP conference.
Thanks we have a Green Party to rally around.
